HANAMI SPA
Type: Interior

Theme, context:
Iungo Studio was commissioned to design an urban spa housed within an existing early-20th-century residence on a quiet street in northern Bucharest. Having discovered the practice's previous projects in the wellness sector, the client entrusted our team with the confidence that we could create a space perfectly aligned with their vision - one that would meet their operational needs while offering an elevated sensory and spatial experience.

The property's ample ceiling height and proportions provided a solid foundation for a sensitive transformation. Several architectural elements were kept and carefully restored, including the solid wood staircase with its balustrade, the refurbished doors and their original architraves, all contributing towards a tangible continuity between past and present. Although the herringbone parquet was in good condition, it was fully protected under a sound-absorbing carpet, introduced to enhance the serene, muffled atmosphere essential to the space's purpose. The intervention is fully reversible, allowing the historic material beneath to remain untouched.

Concept:
The interior concept blends Japandi influences with a calm synthesis of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian warmth, with subtle references to the building's original character. The design explores the contrast between the heritage framework and precise contemporary insertions, a dialogue that defines the project's identity.
Soft beige tones and textured fabrics create a continuous, cocoon-like atmosphere throughout the space. The enveloping floor-to-ceiling drapery not only softens acoustics but also acts as a connective layer, visually unifying the sequence of rooms. This textile presence tempers the tactile precision of newer elements: the brushed stainless-steel reception desk, the display structure with integrated lighting, and the minimal light fixtures that punctuate the interior.
At the entrance, the stainless-steel volumes take on a symbolic role - their reflective surfaces capture and momentarily hold the restlessness of the city, mirroring the urban energy that each visitor brings with them. In doing so, they create a threshold of transition: a place where one can shed the agitation of the outside world and prepare for the calm ritual that follows. This subtle psychological choreography guides the visitor from movement to stillness, from exterior tension to interior presence.
Every gesture is restrained and deliberate, from the restored doorways, to through the softened transitions between rooms, to the layered light that shifts from natural to diffuse. Wooden wall panels, backlit mirrors, and tactile upholstery all contribute to a subdued rhythm of material and light.
The result is a balanced, meditative interior, where each surface and junction is designed to support a state of calm and continuity. Through a dialogue between the old and the new, Iungo Studio transformed an aging urban dwelling into a refined wellness retreat - one that feels at once timeless, intimate, and quietly contemporary.
