Theme, context:
Iungo Studio was appointed to design a house extension in Tottenham, North London. The existing Victorian terraced house, built in 1902, has a North facing rear facade, which translated into a lack of sunlight and a poor relationship between the house and the garden.
Concept:
In response, a corner skylight guides the Western evening sunlight into the extension. A wide opening towards the garden flows to include the glass corner and enlarge the visual field. This sense of expectancy and continuity is also reflected in the oiled birch plywood that dresses up walls and counters. As daylight is welcomed inside, both the kitchen area and the lounge gain an inviting sensibility. This space can now be enjoyed over a cup of tea with a neighbour or in the comfort of one's own company, with a good read picked up from the adjustable birch bookshelves as well as for 14 year old Ocean's violin practice. As you open up the bifold doors and make your way into the garden, you notice the reclaimed brick which wraps the extension's exterior. While the reclaimed brick links the old house to the new, the bee hotels, found among the bricks, establish a further connection between the house and the garden.
