Theme, context: The focus is on four single bedroom apartments located on the northern side of a residential building in the London Borough of Islington. The leaseholders approached us looking to extend each unit and transform them into double bedroom flats. Our analysis pointed out that surrounding buildings cut the apartments off from direct sunlight throughout the year. Improving this subsequently became our key objective. Concept: To increase living space while limiting alteration to the existing structure and facade, we thought of our proposal as a device that would maximize daylight in the interior space - a volume that 'sculpts' its way towards the light.
